Hobart Police Recover Stolen Hellcat From Dealership
On April 21, 2021, A Hobart Police Supervisor was in the area of 37th Avenue and I-65 when he noticed a white Dodge Challenger Hellcat with black rims traveling at a high rate of speed entering the southbound ramp from westbound 37th Avenue to I-65 south, according to Captain James Gonzales of The Hobart Police.
The Police Supervisor was in an unmarked police unit and began to follow the Hellcat southbound on I-65. He stated that he the Hellcat made several high-speed lane changes without signaling and he eventually was able to pace the Hellcat at 92 miles an hour in a posted 55 mile per hour zone, Gonzales said.
He conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on westbound Route 30 as it exited the I-65 south off ramp. He conducted a check of the Illinois temporary tag affixed to the vehicle and it returned to a 2004 Chrysler Sebring. He made contact with the driver, who gave conflicting stories about who the car belonged to. He subsequently checked the VIN that was affixed to the door and on the dash, but it came back not on file. He also documented that he could smell a strong odor of burnt marijuana inside of the vehicle. He recovered shipping paperwork and a vehicle window sticker from inside of the glove box that listed a VIN, he conducted a check of the VIN listed on the paperwork and found that the Hellcat had been reported stolen from a car dealership, located in Illinois on March 29, 2021.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Hobart Police Department pending charges.
The suspect is identified as a 29-year-old male with an address listed on theĀ 2300 block of Hillside Avenue in Indianapolis.
The Hellcat was transported to a secure facility, so it could be processed for evidence.
