Human Remains Discovered In East Chicago
On Sunday, February 4, 2024, at approximately 5:00 PM, East Chicago Police Officers were dispatched to 149th Place and Parrish Avenue in reference to possible human remains found near the railroad tracks, according to Chief Jose Rivera.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with an individual who stated that he was walking in the area near the railroad tracks when he saw what appeared to be a human skull in the grassy area near the tracks. He then took the officers to the location. Officers on scene observed the human skull and contacted the Lake County Coroner’s Office as well as the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force. A further search of the area was conducted, and the bottom jaw of the skull was also located.
On Monday, February 5, 2024, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force went back out to the area and conducted a more thorough search. Detectives were able to locate a jacket and part of a vertebrae thanks to the assistance of a drone and cadaver K9.
The Coroner’s office is working on identifying the remains. At this time, it appears the remains might have been there for quite some time, Rivera stated. A more accurate timeline and cause of death will be determined at a later date.
