Inmate Accused of Violent Attack on Correctional Officers at Lake County Jail

A Lake County Jail inmate is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly attacking several correctional officers during a violent outburst earlier this month.

According to a newly filed affidavit, the incident occurred on the morning of June 9, 2025, when inmate Jacob Anderson, 24, of Gary refused to lock down in his jail section and armed himself with two improvised weapons; a broken broom handle and a shower brush handle.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., correctional officers were alerted to Anderson’s refusal to comply and his destruction of a jail video camera. Three Officers responded to attempt a lockdown.

As the officers opened the section door, Anderson allegedly charged at them, attempting to stab them with the makeshift weapons. Officer 1 deployed his taser, which reportedly malfunctioned. Officer 2 then used OC spray in an effort to subdue Anderson, but the inmate continued his assault, striking officers with the broom and brush handles.

All three officers sustained injuries and required medical treatment. Officer 3 suffered cuts to his forehead, nose, upper lip, puncture wounds to the arm and back, a broken nose, and a concussion. Officer 1 was stabbed in the neck and back and sustained additional bruising. Officer 2 received lacerations to the forehead and back.

The affidavit details how additional officers were called in to assist, ultimately subduing Anderson after a chaotic struggle inside the facility.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators corroborated the accounts of the officers, showing Anderson destroying the camera and later charging at officers with weapons in hand. The cost to replace the damaged camera is estimated at $1,612.

Anderson reportedly refused to participate in an interview with investigators. Anderson was initially incarcerated for Domestic Battery and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Anderson is now facing additional charges of Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury Level 5 Felony, Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon Level 5 Felony, and Battery with Bodily Injury to a Public Safety Officer Level 5 Felony.
