
Jasper County Man Charged in Vehicle Shooting Incident
A Jasper County man is facing multiple charges following a shooting that left a vehicle damaged during a confrontation outside a residence in Wheatfield.
On May 9, 2025, a red Chevrolet Avalanche was reportedly struck by gunfire while parked behind a white GMC Sierra on Apple Blossom Lane in Wheatfield. The Avalanche sustained a bullet hole in the rear driver-side door, and a projectile was recovered from the rear seat. The front bumper was also bent into the tire.
On May 22, officers conducted a traffic stop on Christopher Wade Collins as he left a residence in DeMotte. During a search of the vehicle, police located an empty leather shoulder holster. Collins denied involvement and stated he had never been to the location. While being booked into the Jasper County Jail, a .40 caliber bullet was recovered from his boot.
That same evening, officers recovered a black and silver Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun loaded with 14 rounds. The firearm was identified as the weapon used in the incident. A witness reported hearing two gunshots and seeing the white GMC back into the red Avalanche before leaving the scene.
On May 23, 2025, Collins was charged with:
• Criminal Recklessness (shooting a firearm into a building) – Level 5 Felony
• Pointing a Firearm at Another – Level 6 Felony
• Criminal Recklessness – Class B Misdemeanor
The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office has also filed a Habitual Offender enhancement, alleging Collins has accumulated multiple prior felony convictions. According to court documents, these include:
• A 2023 conviction for Maintaining a Common Nuisance (Level 6 felony)
• A 2015 conviction for Burglary (Level 5 felony)
• A 2013 conviction for Forgery (Class C felony)
• A 2011 conviction for Burglary (Class C felony)
Collins is currently lodged in the Jasper County Jail.
