Lake Station Man Arrested For Portage Shooting

On Wednesday around 8:45 PM Portage Police responded to a vehicle vandalism report in the 3700 block of Mitchell, according to police reports.

On arrival Portage Police found a 1998 Cadillac Deville with damage to rear window and inside the vehicle from what appeared to be a bullet. Video surveillance from the neighborhood showed that around 5:15 PM a GMC Terrain drove by the residence and a gunshot was heard. The GMC then sped off on Kingsman Dr.

During the evening hours Lake Station Police spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the possible shooter at a residence in the 2700 block of Benton in Lake Station, the report states. Lake Station Police observed the vehicle till a male left the residence in another vehicle. Lake Station Police initiated a traffic stop on it and held the driver till Portage Police could respond to the stop.

Portage officers met with the suspect at the traffic stop and returned to the residence where the GMC was seen. Officers conducted a search with consent of the owner of the GMC who stated he was not driving it tonight. The owner stated his grandson was in possession of the truck during the timeframe the shooting occurred compared to surveillance video time. During the search of the GMC, police located two spent 9mm casings.

The suspect from the traffic stop now identified as Dillan Gomez, 19, of Lake Station was arrested and searched. In Gomez’s possession during the search were (10) 9mm rounds in his coat pocket that matched the casings round in the GMC.

Gomez was charged with following:

Criminal Recklessness- Level 6 Felony

Criminal Mischief – Level A Misdemeanor

Weapons / Handgun – Level A Misdemeanor
