Lake Station Man Charged After DUI Crash Leaves Two Seriously Injured

A 33-year-old Lake Station man, Shane Jerrold Michael Porter, is facing felony charges following a late-night crash that left two other seriously injured

According to the probable cause affidavit, police responded to a reported vehicular crash at approximately 10:07 p.m. on December 18, 2025, in the 2700 block of Ripley Street in Lake Station. Upon arrival, officers observed a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer registered to Porter and a 2023 Toyota Highlander. Both vehicles had heavy front-end damage.

Court records state Porter was standing outside the Mercury and identified himself through his Indiana driver’s license. Located in the front passenger seat of the Mercury was a male who was bleeding from the face and head and having trouble breathing. The passenger was able to tell officers his name but was in a lot of pain.

Police also located a male trapped inside the Toyota Highlander. That individual stated he could not feel his legs, and officers observed his right leg bent in a way that it should not be bent.

Court documents state Porter was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech, and had a strong odor of alcoholic beverages coming from his breath and body. Porter complained of leg pain and stated, “The driver of the vehicle ran away from the scene.” Officers also observed Porter had soiled clothing and that empty beer bottles were present in the Mercury.

All three individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Porter was later cleared and transported to the Lake County Jail, where his identity was confirmed through the booking process.

While at the scene, a nearby resident approached officers and stated he heard the crash, which he described as a loud rumble, and knew someone was hurt. The resident reported seeing Porter seated in the driver’s seat of the Mercury and stated Porter became argumentative and told him, “Don’t call the police.”

At the scene, Porter was advised of Indiana’s Implied Consent law and asked to submit to standardized field sobriety testing and a breath test. Court records state Porter refused all testing.

Due to airbag deployment and visible injuries to Porter’s hands and face, he was transported for medical treatment. Police later obtained a search warrant for a blood draw, and hospital records showed Porter had an alcohol concentration of 0.271 in his system.

One injured driver later told police he was traveling southbound on Ripley Street when he observed a vehicle enter his lane at a high rate of speed. He attempted to turn left toward Riverview Park but could not avoid the collision. His injuries included a broken right femur, a broken left hand, and multiple scrapes to his hands and face. He was transported to a Chicago hospital for treatment.

Court records state the injured passenger from the Mercury was intubated, experiencing dropping blood pressure, and had sustained broken ribs and severe facial injuries, including the loss of a large portion of an eyelid. That individual was also transported to a Chicago hospital for treatment.

A records check showed Porter was previously convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated earlier this year in Porter County, court records state.
