Laporte County Couple Charged with Battery and Neglect of 7 Week Old Baby

On February 3, 2025, Laporte County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City in response to a 7-week-old female being treated by the ER for a broken femur and other injuries.

According to court documents, the hospital determined the injuries to the 7-week-old baby to include: left humerus fracture, lower left leg fracture of the tibia and fibula, subdural hematoma, posterior rib fractures, possible right humerus fracture, possible retroperitoneal hematoma, and abdominal bruising. The hospital also advised that the injuries are inflicted injuries and not accidental trauma. The injuries were in different stages of healing, making it reasonable to conclude that the injuries to the victim occurred on multiple dates.

According to court documents, the medical treatment staff at the hospital further advised that the lower left leg fractures to the tibia and fibula, called “metaphyseal lesions,” require a very aggressive mechanism as a cause. The mechanism is a “violent twist of that area,” and the injury “is a fracture with a significant mechanism, especially for this age of child and how it occurs.” It was determined by the Franciscan Hospital that the victim would need further treatment by a hospital in Indianapolis

The mother, Kaitlyn Weissert, and father, Kyle Hollihan, offered a variety of explanations for the child’s injuries, with each explanation being ruled out or deemed implausible.

According to court documents, Weissert and Hollihan asserted that Hollihan’s 7-year-old son is likely the perpetrator of the victim’s injuries. Evidence also ruled out that as a potential cause.

Both suspects are currently lodged in the Laporte County Jail.

On March 25, 2025, Kyle A.Hollihan was charged with:

Domestic Battery: F3 Felony
Neglect of a Dependent: F3 Felony
Domestic Battery: F5 Felony
Neglect of a Dependent: F5 Felony

Kaitlyn M. Weissert was charged with:

Domestic Battery: F3 Felony
Neglect of a Dependent: F3 Felony
