LaPorte County Police Seize Over 130 Grams of Cocaine in I-94 Stop
A Michigan City man is facing a Level 2 felony after police say he fled a traffic stop and was later found in possession of over 130 grams of cocaine concealed in his trunk.
According to court documents, on July 22, 2025, a LaPorte County deputy with the Interdiction Unit was conducting highway enforcement patrol on Interstate 94 when he observed a red Lincoln Mark following a semi-truck too closely near the 29-mile marker. The vehicle was seen again tailgating in a construction zone before exiting at US Highway 421.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop just south of County Road 400 North and made contact with the sole occupant, who identified himself as Donyell Mayhew. During the stop, a K-9 unit from Michigan City Police conducted a free air sniff and alerted to the presence of narcotics.
A search of the vehicle revealed two large trash bags in the trunk. As the deputy began inspecting one of the bags, Mayhew allegedly fled on foot toward a nearby Quality Inn and Culver’s. He was apprehended after another officer deployed pepper spray.
Officers then searched the second bag and discovered a red plastic cup containing two compressed packages of a white substance. Field testing and TruNarc analysis confirmed the material to be cocaine, with a total weight of 130.3 grams.
Charge filed July 24, 2025:
• Dealing in Cocaine — Level 2 Felony
Mayhew is currently lodged in the LaPorte County Jail.
