Laporte Man hits 2 year old Child with Car
On March 22, 2025, the LaPorte Police Department was dispatched to the Northwest Hospital – LaPorte due to a 2 year old male being run over by a vehicle.
The officer was informed to get to the hospital ASAP due to the severity of the injuries and the fact that the child would be getting airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis.
According to court documents, the Officer spoke with hospital staff who explained the 2-year-old was brought in by his mother and step father because the child had been struck by a vehicle. The stepfather began explaining that he was helping his friend, Eric Levine, repair his car. The stepfather advised that, after he finished working on the vehicle, Levine returned to his vehicle to leave. Levine backed out of the driveway and struck the 2-year-old child, who was outside behind Levine’s vehicle. Seeing the juvenile had been struck by a car, the parents started to render aid. In that time frame, Levine backed out of the driveway and left in an unknown direction.
The Officers conducted a BMV search on Eric Levine to find that his license is currently suspended. Police made contact with Levine, detained him, and transported him to the LaPorte City Police Department.
During the interview by police, Levine admitted that he had smoked some weed earlier in the day, but that was all. According to court documents, the officer observed that Levine had droopy eyelids, delayed reaction, and slow movements when speaking with the officer. Levine consented to a blood test at the hospital.
While at the hospital, Levine informed the officer that he had smoked weed after he had returned home from running over the child.
Eric Levine is currently lodged at the LaPorte County Jail.
On March 24, 2025, Eric J. Levine was charged with:
1 – Leaving the Scene of an Accident – Offense Committed after Committing OWI: F3 Felony
2 – Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle with a Schedule I or II: F5 Felony
3 – Driving While Suspended – Operation of Vehicle Results in Bodily Injury: F6 Felony
