Magnet Fisherman Pulls Out Grenade, Bomb Squad Responds
On June 12, 2020 at approximately 3:51 AM, Hobart Police received a call for service to the area behind Cagney’s, located at approximately 3rd and Main Street in reference to a grenade that had not been detonated, according to Captain James Gonzales of The Hobart Police. The reporting person stated they were magnet fishing and they recovered the grenade from the lake and the “pin” was still in it.
The Mag Fishing group have only been doing this for about a week and a half, they told RNS. “We’ve found old license plates, an old money order sign, four bicycles, a 12 foot ladder, lots of rebar, and also an old revolver was found a few days prior to today,” Kylie Janke told RNS. We have a Facebook page called NWI Metal Militia where we post all of our finds if anyone wants to check it out.
The supervisor on scene requested assistance from the Porter County Bomb Squad, so that the grenade could be safely disposed of, Police said. The Porter County Bomb Squad responded to the scene and took possession of the grenade. Hobart Police are thankful that no one was injured and they appreciate the assistance from the Porter Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad for their response and assistance with the disposal of the grenade. The Hobart Police Department strongly encourages anyone who finds explosive items or possible explosive items to clear the area immediately and dial 9-1-1, so a proper investigation can be conducted and the device/ ordinance can be removed/ discarded safely.
