Maintenance Workers Praised After Saving Mom & Baby In Schererville Apartment Fire

Around 9:30 AM on Thursday, April 21, 2022 the Schererville Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the Sherwood Lake Apartments in the 800 block of Sherwood Lake Drive, according to Schererville Fire Chief Robert Patterson.

Located in Schererville

Prior to firefighters arrival a rescue of a mother and baby from a second story balcony was completed  thanks to the quick efforts of 3 Sherwood Lake Maintenance workers.  Heavy smoke was filling the apartments from what originated as a dryer fire, Patterson told RNS. The mother and baby were not able to escape their home due to the smoke so they went onto the balcony for help. A maintenance worker was able to grab the baby from the mother while two other workers were able to stand up on each other’s shoulder to assist the mother down. Neither mom or baby were injured during the rescue.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke on their arrival and were able to quickly extinguish the fire, Patterson said. Schererville was assisted with mutual aid & station coverage from St. John Fire Department, Dyer Fire Department, Lake Hills Fire Department, and Munster Fire Department.

The mother and baby as well as the occupants of the unit below are temporarily displaced due to smoke and minor water damage.
