Man Airlifted After Vehicle VS Bike Crash
Thursday night (07/16/20) at 8:29 PM, Deputies Alex Clemons and Tyler Oberholtzer of The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 8700 west block of US 20 in reference to a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist. Upon arrival, an injured male subject was lying on US 20. A pickup truck with damage was stopped in a lane of US 20 and a damaged bicycle was nearby.
The crash investigation determined a red GMC pickup truck, being driven by Brian T. Dean (42 YOA) of La Porte, was traveling east on US 20. A bicyclist, identified as Joseph R. Childers (43 YOA) of Michigan City, was cycling westbound on US 20 in the eastbound lane of travel. Dean was unable to avoid striking Childers. The crash occurred along a stretch of US 20 that is currently under construction, police said Friday.
Childers sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a regional area hospital for treatment, police stated. Dean refused medical treatment at the scene.
Police said Dean was not impaired by alcohol, however alcohol and toxicology test results for Childers are pending.
