Man Arrested In Connection With 2023 Merrillville Hotel Robbery
A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a robbery reported at a Merrillville hotel in June 2023, according to court records.
Scypion V. Weeks, 20, is charged in Lake following an incident that occurred on June 13, 2023, at the Clarion Inn located at 7850 Rhode Island Street in Merrillville.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Merrillville police were dispatched to the hotel shortly after noon after a front desk employee reported being robbed during a checkout dispute. The employee stated that a male and female who had been staying in a hotel room became upset after being told a $100 security deposit could not be returned because the room was rented under a third party’s name. The affidavit states the female jumped onto the counter and grabbed the employee by the shirt collar while Weeks allegedly reached over the counter and forcibly removed an envelope containing hotel paperwork and the $100 cash deposit .
Investigators reviewed hotel surveillance footage that reportedly showed the female restraining the employee while Weeks took the envelope from the employee’s hand. The video then showed both individuals fleeing the hotel on foot immediately after the incident .
The affidavit states investigators later confirmed through witness statements, surveillance footage, and investigative records that Weeks was the individual who took the money, despite claims by the female that she acted alone.
