
Man Charged with Arson After House Fire in Gary
According to court documents, Edwards Redmond Jr. has been charged in Lake Superior Court with arson as a Level 4 felony following two fires reported at his sister’s residence at 2300 block of Buchanan Street in late August .
Police reports state that Gary firefighters responded to the home on August 29, 2025, after neighbors saw flames and called authorities. Witnesses told investigators they saw Redmond enter the residence shortly before the fire started and then running from the area. One neighbor described him wearing a white tank top and black pants and said he was seen parking a Buick with a shattered passenger-side window nearby .
Detectives reported locating Redmond later that day inside a gray Buick registered to him, where officers noted the odor of smoke clinging to his clothes and a red gas can inside the vehicle. He was taken into custody after initially refusing to exit the car .
The affidavit states that Redmond’s sister told investigators he had been staying in the basement of her home temporarily but was told not to return after a prior fire incident. She said she believed he gained entry through a front window that did not lock. She also told police her brother has a history of property destruction that worsens when he does not take medication .
