Man Charged With Attacking Victim, Stealing Phone in Gary Robbery

According to court documents, Edwards Redmond Jr., 26, has been charged in connection with a robbery that occurred on August 28, 2025, near a gas station in the 2200 block of Grant Street in Gary.

Investigators reported that around 3:01 p.m., officers were dispatched to West 23rd Avenue and Grant Street for a robbery call. A witness said he saw a man repeatedly strike a victim, knocking him to the ground, before stealing his cell phone and fleeing east on 23rd Avenue.

The victim told police he had been approached by an unknown man who began hitting him with his fists until he fell. While on the ground, the suspect stole his Android phone. The victim later described suffering bruises to his head and ongoing chest pain from the attack.

Detectives said surveillance footage from the gas station showed Redmond confronting the victim, slamming him to the ground, and striking him in the head and chest. The footage also showed Redmond fleeing the scene.

On August 29, officers arrested Redmond in connection with a separate arson case and recovered a cell phone from his vehicle matching the description of the stolen phone. Detectives later confirmed it belonged to the victim. A witness identified Redmond in a photo array as the attacker seen during the incident.

Charges filed September 4, 2025:

    •    Robbery resulting in bodily injury (Level 3 felony)

    •    Robbery (Level 5 felony)

    •    Battery resulting in bodily injury (Class A misdemeanor)

    •    Theft (Class A misdemeanor)

Redmond is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
