Man Charged with Auto Theft in Jasper County; Requests ICE Notification
Jhan Carlos Ortiz Hurtado, 23, has been charged with auto theft and driving without ever receiving a license after deputies located a stolen vehicle at a Remington truck stop on June 22, 2025.
According to court documents, at approximately 9:25 p.m., a Jasper County sheriff’s sergeant was monitoring traffic near County Road 1100 West and State Road 10 when he was alerted to a possibly stolen vehicle in the area.
The vehicle, a white 2023 Kia Forte, was located parked and unoccupied at the Love’s fuel station. A short time later, a man exited the Love’s and entered the vehicle. As the vehicle began to move, deputies conducted a felony traffic stop and detained the driver.
The driver, identified as Jhan Carlos Ortiz Hurtado, was the sole occupant. Due to a language barrier, a translator was contacted. Ortiz Hurtado stated that he took the vehicle from its owner, a friend, after she tried to leave him at a gas station in Texas. He said he was driving to Chicago because he wanted to be deported. He also admitted he had never received a driver’s license.
Ortiz Hurtado thanked the deputy and requested that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) be contacted so he could be deported back to Colombia.
He was taken into custody without incident and is currently lodged in the Jasper County Jail.
