Upon arrival, officers found a black passenger car on it’s side in the wood line on the South side of U.S. between Waverly Road and S.R. 49. EMS responded however both occupants refused medical treatment.

The male, a 26 year old resident of Michigan City, displayed signs of impairment, Dickey said. After being detained for further investigation, he became argumentative and asked one of the officers, “Aren’t you going to search me?” The officer then located a glass smoking pipe with brown and black residue in his front left pocket. The male insisted the smoking pipe was not his and that he could not be charged because the sweatpants he was wearing weren’t his and belonged to his brother. Other items of paraphernalia were also located in the vehicle.

Preliminary results from a SoToxa Mobile Test, which uses a mouth swab sample, indicated the presence of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. The male later admitted to, “doing a bump” of cocaine earlier this morning.

He was transported to Porter Regional Hospital where another Porter Officer, trained as a Drug Recognition Expert, conducted an in-depth analysis, and blood draw, of the suspect. Afterwards, while attempting to transport the male to Porter County Jail, he began fighting with officers by kicking and trying to bite the arresting officer. During this period of resisting, he made several deliberate statements threatening the officers and their families. A “cage car” had to be summoned to safely transport the male to Porter County Jail. Once at Porter County Jail, he stated he would rather be at LaPorte County Jail, where he had just been released from a week ago.

The male is charged with Intimidation (Level 6 Felony); Operating While Intoxicated (A-Misd); Resisting Law Enforcement (A-Misd); and Possession of Paraphernalia (C-Misd).

The female passenger was not charged and was given a courtesy transport back to Michigan City, police said.
