Man Released From Jail, Accused Of Trying To Leave In Someone Else’s Truck Minutes Later

Matthew Moskvitin, 18, of Lake Zurich, Illinois, is facing charges after investigators say he attempted to take a vehicle from the Newton County Sheriff’s Department parking lot shortly after being released from jail.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on March 6, 2026, at approximately 5:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the Newton County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say Moskvitin had recently been released from the jail when he attempted to take a 2010 Dodge Ram from the parking lot.  

After the vehicle’s lights were seen turning on through jail security cameras, the vehicle’s owner went outside and found Moskvitin seated in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.  

Moskvitin was escorted back into the jail lobby, where officers found the vehicle owner’s wallet, keys, and gift cards on his person.  

According to the affidavit, Moskvitin stated he intended to take the vehicle and the personal items found inside the vehicle to assume the owner’s identity.  

Charges filed March 16,2026:

    •    Theft — Class A Misdemeanor

    •    Unauthorized Entry Of A Motor Vehicle — Class B Misdemeanor
