Man Severely Injured In Lansing Crash Was Driven To Highland

On Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at approximately 3:22am, Highland Police Officer Nick Vanni was parked in a parking lot at 2nd & Ridge Road in Highland when a maroon passenger car quickly pulled into the lot and the passenger exited the vehicle advising the officer that their friend was severely injured and in the backseat of the vehicle, according to Commander John Banasiak of The Highland Police.

The male in the rear was bleeding profusely from his head and had suffered an apparent compound fracture to one of his arms. Officer Vanni requested an ambulance then used a t-shirt to put pressure on the male’s head wound to try and control the bleeding, Banasiak said.

Officers then asked the other males what had happened. The males advised that their friend in the backseat had allegedly been in a bad car accident at an unknown location in Lansing, Illinois and they were trying to get him to a nearby hospital but they could not find a hospital. The location of the accident is believed to be near JJ Kelley’s behind the old K-Mart building where a car was rolled and on fire.

When medics arrived, it was determined that the injury to the male was life threatening so they requested that an air ambulance be dispatched. A UCAN helicopter was dispatched and the ambulance transported the patient to the parking lot of Griffith Plaza at Ridge and Cline, as this was the nearest place for a safe landing zone for the UCAN helicopter. UCAN then landed and the patient was loaded and then transported to the University Of Chicago Hospital for further treatment.

The 33 year old patient and the other two males in the vehicle were from Illinois. The status of the patient is unknown at this time.

Lansing Police & The SMART Team were investigating the scene late Tuesday morning. Lansing Police will be providing further updates later Tuesday. Check back for updates.
