Man Shot Following Argument Outside Matey’s Bar

MICHIGAN CITY — A 25-year-old LaPorte man was shot early Saturday morning after an argument at a local bar, according to the Michigan City Police Department.

At approximately 2:34 a.m. on August 3, 2025, the LaPorte County E-911 Regional Dispatch Center received multiple reports of gunfire and fighting at Matey’s Bar. Officers from Uniform Patrol Shift III, assisted by deputies from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, Long Beach Police Department, and Trail Creek Police Department, responded to the scene.

Responding units located the victim, identified as Dante Sellers of LaPorte, at the entrance of a parking lot across the street from the bar. Sellers had sustained a gunshot wound. Officers administered life-saving measures until LaPorte County EMS transported him to Franciscan Hospital. He was later transferred to the University of Chicago Hospital for advanced care.

According to preliminary findings, Sellers had been involved in an argument at the bar. As he walked to his vehicle across the street, shots were fired and he was struck.

The Michigan City Police Department’s Investigative Division has taken over the case, which remains active and ongoing. Authorities emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated and not a random act of violence.
