Man That Fled From Highland Police Found Hiding In Garbage Can In Griffith
On April 4, 2025 around 10:55 PM, Highland Police Officers stopped a Hyundai Elantra near Ridge & Cline for having an expired license plate, according to court documents. When officers walked up to the car they immediately smelled the odor of marijuana leading to an investigation.
The female driver was found to have a suspended license upon review. A male in the backseat provided a name and birthdate to the officer which was false. When the male was asked to step out the vehicle and searched, police located a bag of marijuana in his possession and an ID with a different name than what he provided. While officers attempted to check the name the male subject took off on foot leading to a foot chase. That male was later found to be hiding in a garbage can by police during a search of a neighborhood.
The male later told police he ran because of warrants he had. Officers learned that the ID the man had on him did in fact belong to him and not his cousin as he originally stated. He was identified as Devard Shemar Gayle, 22, of East Chicago.
Police also located components of a handgun on the floor of the car where he was originally sitting. A search of the males backpack also turned up other components of a gun which included a magazine that fit the components found on the floor, a box of chicken nuggets which contained a grip for a gun, and a bullet in the back seat where he was seated. The male told police he bought the parts for the gun online individually for around $500.
Gayle was ultimately charged with :
Unlawful Carrying Of A Handgun With A Felony – Level 5 Felony
Identity Deception – Level 6 Felony
Resisting Law Enforcement – Misdemeanor
Gayle has pending charges from January of 2024 for unlawful carrying of handgun and marijuana possession here in Lake County. Also a pending case from 2020 which includes charges of auto theft, resisting with a vehicle, 2 counts of reckless driving, operating a vehicle without a license, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
