Merrillville Police Investigating Homicide
The Merrillville Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred
early Saturday morning.
On 8/12/2023 at approximately 1 AM, Merrillville patrol officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of E 83rd Avenue in reference to a fight.
Officers quickly arrived on scene and observed that one subject had been stabbed in the neck. Officers attempted to help the victim the best they could as medics were summoned to the scene. Patrol officers were able to locate the suspect still on scene and take him into custody.
The victim was later transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The identity of the victim is withheld pending the notification of his family.
Merrillville Detectives began to investigate the case and presented charges against the suspect to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office accepted charges against Nelson Omar Alvarez-Godoy for Murder, Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury, Battery Resulting in Injury, and Battery. Nelson is currently in custody at the Lake County Jail for these
charges.
Merrillville Detectives are continuing to work this case and it is still in its preliminary stages of investigation.
