Merrillville Police Nab Man Wanted for Attempted Murder After Portillo’s Crash

Merrillville- A man wanted in a Gary attempted murder case was taken into custody after a traffic incident at Portillo’s in Merrillville.

According to court documents, Merrillville police responded to the Portillo’s parking lot at 555 E. Lincoln Highway shortly after 6:07 p.m. on October 15, 2025 for a reported crash. When officers arrived, the driver of a gray Nissan refused to give his name, prompting officers to ask him to step out of the vehicle.

The officer noted the man moved quickly around the vehicle, prompting commands to raise his hands. The driver then provided two false names and birthdates — first identifying himself as “Remy Dunlap” (DOB 12/21/2001) and then as “Kendall Gibson” (DOB 01/22/2004). Officers determined neither identity matched the man at the scene.

The driver eventually admitted his real identity as Kevon R. Gibson . A warrant check revealed he was wanted on a Level 1 felony attempted murder charge stemming from an August 17, 2025 shooting in Gary. Gibson was detained on scene.

New Charges Filed October 16, 2025 — Merrillville Town Court

  • False Informing — Class B Misdemeanor (two counts)

Charges pending from August 17, 2025 shooting:

  • Attempt Murder (Attempt to Commit) — Level 1 Felony
  • Aggravated Battery — Posing a Substantial Risk of Death — Level 3 Felony

Gibson was booked into the Lake County Jail following his arrest at Portillo’s.
