Merrillville Police Pursuit Ends In River In South Holland
An early morning police pursuit which originated in Merrillville Sunday morning ended in a river in South Holland.
Around midnight Sunday Merrillville Police attempted to stop a Gray Tahoe near 61st and Broadway. The Tahoe refused to stop and a pursuit began Northbound on Broadway. Multiple agencies jumped into the pursuit along Broadway including Gary, Lake County Sheriff, and Merrillville. At one point during the pursuit the suspect rammed a Merrillville Police car. The pursuit continued West on 80/94 into IL. Munster officers attempted to spike strip the vehicle near the Calumet Ave exit possible taking out one tire. The pursuit continued on the Bishop Ford before exiting at 159th Westbound into South Holland. The Tahoe lead officers through a neighborhood before coming to a dead end near 160th & Avalon and crashing into a barricade.
The driver bailed out on foot and swam across the river while a female passenger was arrested after the crash. The driver fled from Merrillville Police on the other side of the river. The officer who was struck during the pursuit was uninjured.
Merrillville Police were not immediately available for comment Sunday on charges.
