Michigan City Man Charged in Ongoing Sex Crime Investigation
MICHIGAN CITY – A Michigan City man has been arrested and formally charged following an investigation into alleged sexual encounters with a child, according to the Michigan City Police Department.
Authorities say the investigation began on November 3rd, when police received a complaint involving an adult male reportedly engaging in sexual activity with a child known to him. Detective Corporal Adam Brinkman of the Michigan City Police Department, working alongside the Indiana Department of Child Services, launched an immediate investigation.
During the course of that investigation, detectives identified 66-year-old Billy Cannon of Michigan City as the suspect. A search warrant was executed at Cannon’s residence on November 7th, leading to his arrest. Police said evidence found at the home supported the victim’s allegations.
Following the investigation, Corporal Brinkman presented findings to the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office, which resulted in a probable cause review. On November 10th, Judge Jaime Oss of LaPorte County Superior Court 1 found probable cause to file the following charges against Cannon:
- Two counts of Child Molesting – Defendant at least 21 years old (Level 1 Felony)
- One count of Rape (Level 3 Felony)
- Three counts of Child Molesting – Fondling or Touching a Child Under 14 (Level 4 Felony)
- One count of Resisting Law Enforcement (A-Misdemeanor)
- One count of Inappropriate Communication with a Child (B-Misdemeanor)
Cannon is currently being held on a $100,000 cash bond at the LaPorte County Jail.
