Michigan City Man Charged with Murder Following Fatal Shooting Outside Matey’s Bar
LAPORTE COUNTY — A 27-year-old Michigan City man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting outside a LaPorte County bar that claimed the life of a 25-year-old LaPorte resident.
According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers were dispatched around 2:34 a.m. on August 3, 2025, after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire and a fight in and around Matey’s Bar. Responding officers found Dante Sellers, 25, at a parking lot entrance across the street from the bar with a gunshot wound. Sellers was transported by EMS to Franciscan Hospital, then transferred to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he later died.
Investigators learned that Sellers had become involved in an argument inside the bar. As he walked to his car across the street, gunshots were fired, striking him.
The Michigan City Investigative Division and the LaPorte County Drug Task Force took over the investigation. Authorities say their work led to the identification of 27-year-old Cevin Crawford as the suspected shooter.
On August 5, 2025, Crawford was spotted inside a vehicle at a gas station in south LaPorte. Officers followed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near Crestwood and Glencove, where Crawford was arrested on probable cause for murder. The arrest was assisted by the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team, Crime Suppression Unit, and Uniform Patrol Shift III.
Following review by LaPorte County Prosecutor Sean Fagan and Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Konieczny, Magistrate John Link found probable cause to charge Crawford with:
• Murder
Cevin Crawford is currently being held without bond pending his initial hearing, scheduled for August 7, 2025, in LaPorte County Superior Court #1 at 8:30 a.m.
Authorities say additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
