Morocco Couple Charged with Murder in Fatal Newton County Shooting

A married couple from Morocco, Indiana, has been charged with murder and multiple felonies following the May 22, 2025, shooting death of a man outside their home in rural Newton County.

Matthew and Theresa DeYoung were formally charged on May 29, 2025, after deputies responded to a 911 call and found Dennis Griede lying in the driveway of the couple’s residence on West 50 South. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital in Illinois, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to court documents, Theresa DeYoung initially told police that her husband shot Griede after a physical altercation outside the home. However, investigators uncovered inconsistencies in the couple’s statements and found that Theresa and Griede had spent time together at a local bar earlier that evening. Surveillance video showed the two embracing and kissing.

Police learned that an earlier confrontation occurred that same night between Matthew DeYoung and Griede at a nearby campground. During the later shooting incident, Theresa admitted to firing a handgun into the air and placing the same weapon near Griede after he had been shot. The firearm was later recovered approximately 100 yards from where Griede was found.

Three children, ages 10, 13, and 15 were inside the home at the time of the incident. Authorities allege both defendants delayed calling 911 and took actions to hinder the investigation.
