Mother Charged With OWI While Having a 2 Year Old In a Car Stuck On Railroad Tracks
On December 12, 2024, around 5:00 PM, Porter County Officers were dispatched to SR 2 & CR 300 N in reference to a disabled vehicle on railroad tracks. Dispatch further advised officers the driver appeared to be intoxicated, according to a report.
On arrival officers found a car stuck on the tracks and a woman who explained she was driving home to her residence in Demotte after visiting her sister’s residence. At that home she stated she consumed shots of vodka prior to driving. When officers asked Chelsea who else was in the vehicle, she was unsure of how many of her children were inside. Officers located her child who is 2 years old in the back seat.
While speaking with the woman her balance was unsteady and speech was slurred. Her breath also emanated the smell of alcoholic beverage, the report stated. The woman refused to do a portion of the sobriety tests. She was then transported for a chemical test at a local hospital which showed she was at a .388 BAC. Due to her high BAC she was evaluated by staff before being released back to police custody. The child in the car was released to the father.
The woman now identified as Chelsea White, 28, of DeMotte was transported to Porter County Jail and charged with:
OWI with a minor present – Level 6 Felony
OWI with Prior – Level 6 Felony
OWI Endangers – Class A Misdemeanor
