Hessville Fire Damages Building Sunday

An early morning fire left a Hessville building damaged Sunday morning. Hammond Fire Department responded around 4:55 AM to Kennedy Tire & Rims & Xtreme Motorsports located at 6641 Kennedy Ave in Hammond, according to Hammond FIre Chief Jeff Smith.

Crews were on scene till around 6:30 AM in negative temperatures fighting the blaze, Smith said. Kennedy Ave was closed for a few hours during the fire. Fire investigators are still on scene Sunday morning trying to determine the cause of the fire.

The location which is attached to multiple businesses goes back a long time in the history of Hessville. Originally the location a former laundromat back in the 60’s and Loomis Cycle Sales which also housed a Sherwin Williams Paint store, according to local resident Perry Stabler. Then years later a different owner bought it and made it a repair store for motorsports.

The buildings are since joined together now since remodeling over the years by removing a brick wall. The Extreme Motorsports store had smoke damage while the Kennedy Tires portion suffered from water damage. Through the years the Motorsports store moved to the other half of the building which did not suffer as much damage. The main part of the building that had the damage was actually a vacant portion of the attached building. The owner of Xtreme Motorsports will remain open he told RNS.
