Multiple Fire Departments Battle Machine Fire
Shortly after 4 PM, Monday, the Schererville Fire Department was dispatched to ECKART America Corporation for a fire with black smoke coming from a stack pipe. ECKART is located at 650 W 67th Ave behind Portillo’s off of 41.
An equipment malfunction caused a contained fire to the area of origin in a piece of machinery, according to the Schererville Fire Department. Fire personnel followed proper procedures, and all safety & protection systems in place were activated, Schererville Fire Chief Robert Patterson stated.
Fire department personnel remained on scene until the incident was stabilized around the 6 PM hour. No injuries occurred and there was no damage to other parts of the structure. As of 6:30 PM crews are cleaning up and clearing the scene.
Schererville Fire Department was assisted with mutual aid from the Dyer Fire Department, St John Fire Department, Merrillville Fire Department, Highland Fire Department, Lake Hills Fire Department and the Griffith Fire Department.
