Multiple People Injured In Hammond Crash Where Driver Fled

On June 4th at approximately 10:35 a.m. Hammond police responded to an accident near the intersection of Hohman Ave. and Lawndale St, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of the Hammond Police.

Investigators determined that it was a two vehicle accident, one of which rolled over. A silver vehicle traveling North on Hohman struck a no parking sign and then attempted to readjust striking a southbound vehicle.

The suspects silver car rolled coming to a stop on a decorative light pole and the driver fled but later returned to the scene. The male is in custody, police stated. A witness told RNS the driver attempted to play it off as if he was the passenger when he returned to the scene. Police later determined the vehicle to be a rental car with Georgia plates.

Three people were injured in the struck car, Kellogg said. One person is in serious condition and was flown to a Chicago hospital for her injuries.

Hohman Ave was shut down till 4:15PM in both directions for crash reconstruction.

No further information was immediately available.
