Multiple Power Outages Reported From The Illinois State Line into Michigan Thursday

Last evening, January 30, 2025, NIPSCO experienced electrical outages to its system related to weather, according to a NIPSCO spokesperson.

The rain and dampness saturated and affected some wires and crossarms, and in several cases caused blown fuses resulting in sparking when the fault closes as per design. The weather also caused arcing conditions at several poles, resulting in small fires. A pole in Highland and Gary were noted by RNS subscribers in our group last night.

A substation was also impacted by the weather and experienced arcing when a small transformer failed, and breakers opened to isolate the damage (as they are designed to do during an event) and could potentially be visible to those in the immediate vicinity.

Switching was conducted to get customers’ service restored as quickly as possible while the affected equipment was isolated, and the necessary repairs could be completed.

NIPSCO thanked their customers for their patience and understanding last evening as their crews worked as safely and quickly as possible to restore customers in the inclement weather conditions, especially those in the most impacted areas of Hobart, Dyer, St. John, Schererville and East Chicago.

Some residual effects to the outages are causing issues with traffic signals throughout the region this morning.
