Munster Officer Extricated From Squad Following Crash

On Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at approximately 8:45 PM a Munster Police Officer was traveling in the 1400 block of Ridge Road when he observed a violator traveling westbound at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic, according to Munster Police.

The officer conducted a U-turn on Ridge Road and attempted to catch up to the violator. In the area of Ridge Road and Beech Avenue the officer’s patrol vehicle collided with a pickup truck that was conducting a left turn onto Beech Avenue, from eastbound Ridge Road, Police stated. The officers patrol vehicle came to rest on the southside sidewalk of Ridge and Greenwood.

The officer had to be extricated from his vehicle due to a cement wall on the drivers side and the impact from the truck and NIPSCO pole. Over a dozen firefighters and paramedics worked for 20 minutes to free him from the wreckage. The officer was transported to Community Hospital for treatment and was later released from the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

The vehicle the officer was attempting to catch up to was not located and has not been unidentified, State Police said.

Munster Police Department requested the Indiana State Police to conduct the investigation into the crash due to it being an on-duty accident.
