Munster Police Chase Stolen Truck That Hit Squad Car After The Chase
On April 23, 2020 at approximately 4:30 AM a Munster Police Officer initiated a traffic stop on a light-colored Jeep traveling southbound in the 8700 block of Calumet Avenue. , according to Lt. John Peirick of the Munster Police. The vehicle slowed momentarily and then fled west on Fisher Place and after a shortdistance, the vehicle came to a stop near Fisher Place and Harrison Avenue and two individuals fled from the vehicle, Peirick stated. The suspect vehicle was not in “park” as the individuals fled, and it rolled into an unoccupied Munster Police squad causing damage to the front driver’s side quarter panel and door. Due to both vehicles being unoccupied, there were no injuries, Police stated.
Munster officers, with the assistance from a Lake County K-9, searched the area but were unable to locate any of the individuals that fled from the vehicle. A short time later it was revealed that the vehicle was in fact stolen from Chicago earlier in the night, Peirick told RNS.
A Munster resident later contacted the police and advised that an individual was wandering in the area of the 500 block Fisher Place around 8am. As Officers arrived, they observed a male that matched the description of the driver of the stolen vehicle and he was taken into custody, Peirick said. The suspect is a juvenile and will be charged later through the Lake County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
In an unrelated incident Munster Police chased a white Chrysler through the same area Wednesday evening that was wanted in the surrounding area for a shooting that occurred in Chicago Heights earlier in the week. Munster Police terminated that pursuit near 394 & 30. It’s unknown if Illinois State Police were able to locate the vehicle.
