Munster Police Receive Donations For D.U.I. Education
This past spring, in an effort to help provide new and interesting ways to help educate the public and the community’s youth about the dangers of drinking and driving, the Munster Police Department sought the support of local businesses or organizations to assist with the purchase of pedal carts and accompanying drunk driving impairment simulation goggles, The Munster Police Department told RNS.
After putting the word out to the public, the Munster Rotary Club and American Community Bank provided generous donations to help the police department purchase two separate carts and pairs of simulation impairment goggles for safety instruction purposes.
The simulation pedal carts read “Don’t Drink and Drive” on the sides and have adjustable seats so that kids, adults, and teens can operate them. The rider will first pedal through a course without wearing the impairment goggles and then are asked to do so again while wearing the goggles which simulate either .08-.15 blood alcohol content or .26-.35 blood alcohol content, depending on the pair that the operator is wearing. The “driver” can then experience how difficult it is to drive through the course and spectators can observe the effects that the impaired vision has on the driver’s operation of the cart.
These carts will be used during the coming years during both community policing events and through Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) class instruction to help educate the public about the dangers of drunk driving.
The Munster Police Department extended their thanks to American Community Bank and the Munster Rotary Club for their generous support of this important community safety initiative.
