Murder Charges Filed After EC Homicide
On July 12, 2024, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force secured Felony Murder charges against 40 year old Maya D. Washington of Gary, Indiana. She is currently in custody at the Lake County Sheriff Department Jail.
On July 4, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to 3600 Superior Court in East Chicago reference to a male party who stated he was shot. Upon arrival, officers located the male victim near the entrance of Superior Court. The male victim advised officers that he was shot in the stomach. Officers observed a single gunshot wound to the victims stomach and immediately requested medics.
Medics arrived on the scene and transported the victim to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment. On July 5, 2024, at approximately 1:25 AM, police were notified by the Cook County Medical Examiner that the victim succumed to his injuries. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Jerome Scott of Gary, Indiana.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was standing next to a vehicle speaking with an unknown party that was sitting inside the vehicle. During the conversation, a gunshot was heard, and the vehicle fled the scene.
