New Chicago Officers Being Trained In EMR Program
The Town of New Chicago Police Department is training some of their officers to become Certified Emergency Medical Responders, according to New Chicago Police Chief Bill Perry. The course, which is spread over 9 weeks, will provide the officers with the knowledge needed to perform detailed patient assessments for medical and trauma emergencies. Additionally, officers will learn skills to control bleeding, manage cardiac arrests, ventilate patients with ineffective breathing, and perform spinal immobilization.
This training will provide the community with a life saving resource in the time of need. Officers trained as EMR’s will be able to respond to medical emergencies in the town and begin assessment and care until the ambulance arrives. At the completion of the course, officers will be equipped with medical jump bags in their squad cars.
Chief Perry stated, “Oftentimes, our officers arrive first on scene to any 911 call in the town. This training will provide our community members with fast access to Basic Life Support care when they need it the most.”
The New Chicago Police Department will be the first department in Lake County, and one of the few in Northwest Indiana, to have their officers dual trained. The course is expected to finish at the end of April.
