Officer Cleared in April 4 Michigan City Shooting Following Investigation

A Michigan City police officer was legally justified in the use of deadly force during an April 4, 2025, incident that ended with the fatal shooting of a fleeing suspect, according to findings released by the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.

The shooting occurred around 5:20 p.m. near 5708 Franklin Street when an officer conducted a traffic stop on a Dodge Journey for driving without headlights during reduced visibility. The passenger provided a false name, “Jose Martinez,” which returned with multiple active warrants. The individual was later identified as Jorge Meza.

While the officer attempted to verify the warrants, Meza fled on foot. Officers gave chase and observed Meza pull a firearm from his waistband and point it at them during the pursuit. Meza reportedly continued running through several parking lots and hedges before turning toward one officer and raising the firearm with both hands in a shooting stance.

Believing he was facing an immediate threat, the officer fired multiple shots, striking Meza. After falling, Meza appeared to reach toward the firearm, prompting the officer to fire again. Meza was transported to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene. Investigators later determined Meza had attempted to fire the weapon multiple times, but a malfunction prevented it from discharging.

The Indiana State Police conducted the investigation and presented the case to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office on May 21, 2025. Prosecutors concluded the officer’s use of force was lawful under Indiana law. The investigation is now closed, and no charges will be filed.
