Officer Injured After Stolen Car Pursuit On 80/94

Around 5:30 PM, Thursday, police attempted to stop a vehicle near Michigan & Calumet that was reported stolen. The vehicle failed to stop leading police from multiple agencies in a pursuit through Hammond.

The vehicle lead police to Calumet & 80/94 where the suspect was spiked successfully by officers. The vehicle came to a stop near the state line on 80/94 where the suspects bailed on foot and ran across eastbound lanes of traffic. The suspects jumped a 3 foot median with a 5 foot drop on the opposite side with multiple officers taking him into custody a short time later.

A St. John Officer was seriously injured during the foot chase leading to an Officer Down call. The officer was transported via police car to Munster Community. St. John Police Chief Steve Flores told RNS, “The officer has a broken ankle and is in some pain but in good spirits at this time.”

Charges are expected to be filed by the Munster Police Department for the pursuit, stolen car, and injuries to the officer during the foot pursuit.

This was the second stolen car pursuit out of Hammond this evening with the first one ending with an arrest on the Bishop Ford near the Steel Bridge. A gun was also recovered thrown out near the crash site.
