On September 5th, at approximately 6:45 PM, Hammond Police responded to an accident in the 7000 block of Southeastern Avenue, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg.

Witnesses stated that a black vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Southeastern attempting to pass another vehicle when it crossed the center line and impacted a gray Jeep traveling southbound. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was identified as 47-year-old Geraldo Nazario from Hammond, Kellogg stated. Mr. Nazario was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were four occupants of the struck vehicle, four of which were children. The children were all transported to Comer’s Children’s Hospital in stable condition. The driver and passenger of the struck vehicle received self-treated injuries.

The toxicology reports are pending and there is no evidence that a race was taking place, Kellogg said.
