Pedestrian Identified in Fatal Crash at U.S. 30 & U.S. 41 in Schererville

A man killed in a vehicle versus pedestrian crash Tuesday evening at the intersection of U.S. 30 and U.S. 41 in Schererville has been identified, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Schererville Police and Fire were dispatched at approximately 5:55 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, to the southbound lanes of U.S. 41 just north of West Lincoln Highway following reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

According to preliminary information from police, a male pedestrian was walking across the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 41. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with investigators.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Coroner investigators later responded to the intersection at approximately 6:35 p.m. The deceased was identified as Charles R. La Bedz, 57, a resident of Steger. Positive identification was made by family members.

Due to the seriousness of the crash, the South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team was called to the scene and is handling the investigation.

As a result of the incident, southbound U.S. 41 near the Walmart shopping area was closed for several hours, causing significant traffic delays.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional details have been released at this time.
