Pedestrian Killed By Train In Hobart Identified
On Tuesday, October 1st, the Hobart Police Department was dispatched to a collision between a train and a pedestrian, with the reporting party being the train engineer. The incident occurred at approximately 12:16 PM near the intersection of 41st Avenue and Wisconsin Street, according to a Hobart Police press release.
The pedestrian was identified as Keith Deering, 38, of New Chicago, Indiana, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The circumstances leading up to the incident are currently under investigation by the Hobart Police Department in conjunction with the railroad authority and the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The preliminary investigation suggests that the deceased was wearing headphones while walking in the center of the tracks. Police are working to determine all factors that contributed to this tragedy, including the pedestrian’s actions and the operational status of the railway system at the time of the accident.
Hobart Chief of Police Garrett Ciszewski stated, “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, as Mr. Deering was a husband and father. We urge all members of the public to exercise extreme caution around railways and to remain vigilant in observing all posted safety warnings and signals.”
Police reminded citizens that, although this set of tracks is not widely used, in Indiana, walking along the tracks or a railroad right of way is considered a Class B Misdemeanor due to the inherent dangers. Parents, please ensure that your children are not walking along or on the railroad tracks.
