Person Of Interest Wanted From Recent Gary Homicide

Update – Gaines is in custody as of this hour without incident, according to Commander Jack Hamady.

On August 17, 2022, at approximately 9:10 PM Gary Police Department received a call for service reference a possible gunshot victim bleeding and unresponsive laying in the street on the 3200 block of W 21st, according to Commander Jack Hamady.

Officers arrived on scene and located the adult male who was in fact unresponsive. Officers observed an injury which is consistent with a gunshot wound, Hamady said.

Gary Fire Department arrived on scene and advised the male was lifeless and the Lake County Coroner’s Office and Lake County Crime Lab was notified.

The Lake County Coroner has identified the victim as Cornelius Olive, 79, of Gary.

Detectives from Lake County Metro Homicide developed a person of interest in this case who was last seen in the area. Tyree Gaines, 24, who is described as a black male, 5’05”, 115 lbs. Tyree Gaines is only a person of interest and is asked to turn himself in, Hamady told RNS. A picture of Gaines is below.

Tyree Gaines has emailed the City of Gary, as well as neighboring communities and made several threats via email which closed numerous buildings today. Police believe the male is unstable and they ask the public not to approach him.
