Police Chase Ends In Chicago Monday Afternoon

At approximately 2:05 p.m. on April 20, 2020, Detective Ibarra, of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Highway Interdiction Unit, attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding northbound on Interstate 65 at the Kankakee River near mile marker 235, said Sheriff Oscar Martinez.

The vehicle immediately accelerated and travelled at a high rate of speed on I-65.

Detective Ibarra observed the maroon Hellcat Dodge Charger move from lane to another lane at a high rate of speed.   Sheriff Oscar Martinez stated that detective Ibarra then initiated a pursuit of the vehicle which had Georgia plates.

Sheriff Martinez said that Detective Ibarra ran a license registration check on the vehicle, which came back stolen out of Georgia.   Dispatch advised the suspect could be armed and dangerous.   Sheriff Oscar Martinez said the pursuit continued northbound to westbound I-80/94 towards Chicago.   Lake County and Indiana State Police chased the vehicle into Illinois.  The pursuit continued north on interstate 94. The pursuit came to an end at exit 61B (87th St.) in Chicago when the Charger crashed into another vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended by Lake County Police officers.    While being arrested, detectives observed a loaded handgun in plain view on the driver side floorboard of the vehicle.  The gun was also reported stolen from the State of Georgia.  

Illinois State Police assisted the officers with the pursuit and also handling the accident report.  Injuries were not severe.  Two civilians were transported to the hospital. 

The suspect, a 17-year-old male of Chicago, is being detained by auto detectives with the Chicago Police Department Chicago Auto for possible charges including possession of stolen vehicle and possession of a stolen handgun.   

Sheriff Oscar Martinez said Lake County detectives will file formal charges and paperwork to extradite the suspect back into Indiana.
