Around 2:25 PM Hammond Police responded to shots fired in the area of Hammond Central High School near the intersection of Calumet Ave & Highland St on the south side of the new building.
Police arrived on scene to find two Hammond Central students were shot, Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police stated. One of those students had reportedly walked back into the building for help at the nurses office. The students were transported to nearby hospitals in stable condition.
A crime scene was visible near the parking lot on the south half of the new school building on Highland St. Fire personnel and ambulances were also seen leaving the scene from this entrance.
Three other students involved in the situation remain at large, with the Hammond Police Department investigating, School City of Hammond said.

UPDATE – Hammond Police have a male in custody that is believed to be the suspect from The Hammond Central Shooting today, according to sources. It is believed at this time the shooter is not a student or a Hammond resident. However he is a juvenile and his identity is being withheld.
