Police Talk Man Down Off Water Tower Friday
On Friday, July 1st, around 8:30 AM, across from the Lake County Government Center, Crown Point Police & Fire were dispatched to the water tower for a suicidal male climbing.
Lake County Sheriff’s Department Deputies responded immediately and were able to coax the male down calmly after a short time. There were no injuries reported but the Crown Point Fire Department transported the male for an evaluation at a local hospital, Crown Point Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner Jr. said.
Indiana Conservation Officers were also on scene to assist with their expertise in rope tech rescues if needed. Merrillville Police also responded to aid in the situation.
“I am extremely proud of the compassion, professionalism and dedication of our officers who were able to coax a man to come down from the water tower,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr said Friday. “Our officers receive training in negotiation techniques they can use in intense situations like this one. Their instincts and empathy were key factors in helping to bring this person to safety.”
