Portage Fire Battles Fire In Frigid Conditions Friday

Portage Fire Department was called for a car on fire in a garage that was next to a home on Glenwix Street around 10:20 AM Friday, according to Portage Fire Chief Randy Wilkening.

Reports from witnesses stated there was a woman still in the home unable to get out while crews were dispatched, according to callers. Upon fire crews arrival, the resident was out of the structure, Wilkening said. The woman trapped was helped out of a window by a neighbor and a meals on wheels delivery person, Wilkening stated. The fire had quickly spread to the home leaving no exit for the woman. The intense heat of the flames also caused damage to two other homes next to the fire.

Fire crews also battled with frozen hydrants on scene but eventually found one working. Extra departments were called out due to the cold and water problems, Wilkening added.

One resident was transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation and their condition is not known at this time. The fire caused severe damage to the home, garage and vehicle. Portage Fire was assisted by South Haven, Union, Ogden Dunes, Burns Harbor, Liberty, Porter Fire Departments.
