Portage High School Student Identified In Fatal Crash
On Sunday, October 16, 2022, at approximately 12:37 PM, officers of the Portage Police Department responded to the
5700 block of Stagecoach Road in reference to a report or a motor vehicle accident with one person seriously injured, according to Portage Police.
Upon arrival, officers located a black 2007 Cadillac CTS off the roadway on its passenger side. The driver of the vehicle as well as another passenger were attempting to provide CPR to the injured person. Portage Fire Department medics arrived on scene and took over treatment of the patient and requested a medical helicopter. Despite their efforts the injured person died at the scene. A second passenger sustained minor injuries. The driver and surviving passenger were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and evaluation and were later released.
The initial investigation shows that the Cadillac was traveling eastbound on Stagecoach Road. The driver of the Cadillac
failed to negotiate a lefthand curve in the roadway due to excessive speed and the vehicle left the southside of the road
and rolled over several times. It appears the deceased was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, Portage Police said.
The Portage Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. At the conclusion of this investigation the final report will be presented to the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office for review and
determination of what, if any, criminal charges will be filed.
The deceased is a seventeen-year-old male from Portage, Indiana who was a student at Portage High School. The Porter County Coroner identified the deceased as Dylan Childers. The Portage Township School System has made a crisis team consisting of counselors and advisers available to the student body.
Assisting with this incident were the Portage Fire Department and Porter County Coroner’s Office.
