Portage Man Crashes Car While Attempting To Flee Police
On February 7 around 8:45am Portage Police on patrol witnessed a driver cross the center dividing line multiple times on Crisman Road. Police reports state the driver ran two vehicles off the roadway before blowing through a stop sign as he made a left on Portage Ave. As officers attempted to catch up the vehicle and made the same left as the driver they noticed the suspect had crashed into a bunch of trees and was stopped after hitting a NIPSCO pole on the opposite side of the road. As officers approached the crashed vehicle the suspect now identified as Edward Drozd, 26 of Portage, was exiting the vehicle and took off into a wooded area on foot. Officers yelling for the Drozd to stop as he continued running and jumping over fallen trees. The initial pursuing officer lost the suspect and a perimeter was established by Portage Police. Drozd was taken into custody shortly after police followed his footprints in the snow.
Once in custody Drozd explained he ran because he did not have a license and he was tired from working overnight, a police report states. Officers learned Drozd did not have a license because he was a Habitual Traffic Violator.
Edward Drobz was taken to Porter County Jail on the following charges
Resisting Law Enforcement In A Vehicle – Level 6 Felony
Habitual Traffic Violator – Level 6 Felony
Resisting Law Enforcement – Misdemeanor
Leaving The Scene Of An Accident –
Class B Misdemeanor
Why do people still run from the Police?! They are TRAINED to chase you…..your NOT trained at running or evading them!!!! They have equipment to find you…..helicopters with cameras and thermal imaging, they have scent dogs, radios….ect…. I can never understand why this still happens….People that run only endanger the public, Police and property, but only compound their charges.
