Portage Police Investigating Homicide
On Wednesday October 16th, 2024, at approximately 3:30 AM, Portage Officers responded to 6515 Ameriplex Drive (Camaco) in reference to a report of shots fired outside of the building.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a twenty-two-year-old Chesterton man in the employee parking area who was deceased. Witnesses report that during shift change there was a verbal argument between the deceased and the suspect prior to the shooting. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. Detectives have since identified a possible suspect and taken him into custody in nearby Merrillville.
The Porter County Coroner has identified the decedent as 22-year-old Lenell Jenkins, of Chesterton, IN. The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.

There were no other reported injuries, and police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. Other businesses in the area are continuing with normal operations, police added.
